Good News for Gorillas

Gorillas have had difficult times. Their numbers dwindled as the were hunted by humans, or suffered from diseases like ebola. The last gorilla census, conducted in the 80s, estimated there were only 100,000 gorillas left in the world. However, researchers in equatorial Africa estimate there are 125,000 gorillas living in just that area. The researchers say this is the highest density of gorillas ever found.

The discovery is not enough to take gorillas off the endangered species list, but it is good news the gorilla population has rebounded.

not to be a downer, but it seems like most primates aren't so lucky: http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/labnotes/archive/2008/08/04/last-primate-standing.aspx

Good news, but still very sad. All primates, apart from humans, are declining very quickly. We are destoying them all.

Nice to see a good news blog getting some airtime - I've been doing one every day since last October as an experiment. It's hard work finding good news stories sometimes, I must say, but I'm determined to keep it up for a full year. Funnily enough, I also posted the gorillas story yesterday! E

Congratulations on blog of note, it happened to me last week and i'm still smiling, i've always said that the only value in blog of note lies with the quality of the other blogs chosen, yours adds to that value wonderfully

Nancy Ferguson said...

I'm all for being cheerful, but actually only lowland gorillas are doing anywhere close to okay. The mountain gorillas, a totally different species (the ones with long hair) are nearly extinct, with only a few hundred left. I think it is important to be clear that the mountain gorilla is in beyond critical condition-- it is definitely not good news for them, and people need to know that, or they won't care about trying to save the last few dozen left!

Rick said...

Go Gorillas! We can't have too many hairy apes around. At leas that's what I tell my girls when I take my shirt off.
